Fiery protest goes awry in Gurgaon

Four Gurgaon students suffered burn injuries on Sunday while trying to burn an effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as part of protests against the death of the 23-year-old gang rape victim.

All four students were released from the civil hospital after first aid. According to eyewitnesses, students suffered burn injuries when kerosene being sprayed on the effigy accidently fell on them. "They had burn injuries on their faces, hands and legs," said inspector Rajendra Singh. However, nobody suffered more than 20% injuries.

On Sunday, various protest marches were organized in Millennium city. The protesters, including students and industrial workers, gathered at Leisure Valley park near Sahara Mall on the MG Road and demanded justice for the victim.

Agitated students also burnt effigies of the Delhi and Haryana chief ministers near Aggarwal Dharamshala in the city, demanding better security for women.

"Women in Gurgaon face several problems, especially while travelling in cabs and autorickshaws. The law and order situation in the city is also poor," said a protester.

Another ( rape case) rape-in-bus bid alleged, now in Baghpat

In a virtual rerun of the Delhi bus gang rape case, a girl passenger was allegedly molested by the bus conductor on board a mini bus in Baghpat at day time and in the presence of other passengers. When she raised an alarm, the accused assaulted her and started to push her off the moving bus. It was only when elder sister of the victim begged for mercy that she was spared. Enraged over what had happened, the elder sister of the victim called up the family who in turn intercepted the bus in Bardaut. When the enraged family questioned the conductor about his indecent behavior a free for all ensued as the accused was joined by his aides onboard the bus. Police reached the site but arrested two members of the victim's family while the bus conductor was allowed to go scot-free.

When questioned about the incident, senior officials first feigned ignorance about any such occurrence under their jurisdiction in Baghpat, but when the entire sequence of events was narrated to them the deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Bardaut invited the family to meet him on Sunday morning. But, no action was reported against the accused who manhandled the girl, till late Sunday evening.

The incident took place when a girl and her elder sister boarded a bus from Aasara in Baghpat to reach Bardaut. The moment the bus rolled out of the terminal, the conductor on duty allegedly began to misbehave with the younger of the two sisters. A few associates of the bus conductor, also onboard, joined the accused. When the young girl objected to their conduct, she was manhandled. It was only when the accused tried to push her off the speeding bus that the victim's sister begged them for mercy and the miscreants relented.

Subsequently, the girls called up their family in Nai Basti locality of Bardaut. The family intercepted the bus near the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) building about a kilometer before the Bardaut bus stop. When the girl's family questioned the bus conductor and his associates about their conduct, a free for all ensued and the two sides indulged in exchange of blows. The dazed victim, who was yet to come out of the shock that she had suffered on way to Bardaut, was apparently knocked off her senses.

Cops at a nearby police picket arrived at the scene and arrested two members of the victim's family on the complaint of the bus conductor who was identified later as Dharmendra who also accused them of robbing him during the brawl. Despite repeated requests from the arrested accused and other members of the family, police refused to initiate any action.

About a couple of hours later, the victim's family reached Kotwali Bardaut with the unconscious girl to seek action against the bus conductor but in vain. When approached, in charge of the Kotwali police station inspector Rajendra Singh Yadav confirmed the family brought the unconscious girl to the police station and were asked to first get medical help for the victim and then get back to the police.

Circle Officer (CO) Bardaut, deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Afiq Ahmed said an inquiry is underway into allegations leveled by the girl and action will be initiated on the basis of what results of the inquiry. No action whatsoever was initiated against the bus conductor till late Sunday night.

Rape case: Victim critical, admitted to Singapore hospital

The 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim, who was flown out to Singapore in an air ambulance for specialised treatment, was admitted to the Mount Elizabeth hospital on Thursday morning.

The plane carrying the girl landed at the Changi International Airport at 7.30am(5am IST), the Indian High Commission in Singapore said, confirming the girl's arrival.

Earlier, Late on Wednesday night, the rape victim was flown in a special air ambulance to Singapore.

"Her health is precarious, that's the main issue before the government," said a Union minister, not wanting to be identified. Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital where Nirbhaya (a symbolic name given to the victim by the TOI) was being treated for the last one week were hesitant to hold out hope. "Still, the fight to save her is just as strong," said a doctor.

Safdarjung Hospital sources said Singapore's Mount Elizabeth is equipped to deal with trauma and serious medical complications. It is also capable of carrying out multiple organ transplants. It is understood that Amar Singh's kidney transplant took place at this hospital.

Niirbhaya is being accompanied by Dr P K Verma, incharge of Safdarjung Hospital's ICU, who is leading a team of doctors, many of them from Medanta. Her father and mother are also accompanying her. Three air ambulances have been pressed into service - two of Safdarjung Hospital's and one of Medanta's.

The decision to take Nirbhaya to Singapore is understood to have been taken at the highest level. The Union cabinet discussed her worsening health condition on Wednesday morning and considered options for her medical care abroad. Government is also concerned about fresh protests if the worst can't be averted, and is therefore keen to be seen to be doing its very best to save Nirbhaya. Nirbhaya's condition worsened last night when she suffered a cardiac arrest and was revived after administration of CPR (cardiac pulmonary resuscitation). Through Wednesday, doctors at Safdarjung hospital struggled to fight the infection seeping through her body.

Sources said the government has been considering the possibility of an intestine transplant but Nirbhaya can undergo this only after the sepsis threatening to overwhelm her weakened immune system recedes. Moving Nirbhaya abroad will also mean that Safdarjung hospital is no longer a focus of protestors and media attention.

As word of Nirbhaya's impending transfer spread, the crowd outside the hospital began to swell as protestors began to arrive along with BJP state chief Vidender Gupta. The victim was shifted from Safdarjung hospital in a Medanta ambulance, from the Gurgaon-based multi-speciality hospital run by heart surgeon Naresh Trehan. A team from Medanta also examined Nirbhaya on Wednesday.

Speculation mounted earlier in the evening as for the first time in several days, there was no official word on Nirbhaya's medical condition.

Doctors did not issue a health bulletin and media persons were awaiting official word on her condition. Nirbhaya's family members were also unavailable for information.

Nirbhaya's health concerns loomed in the backdrop of plans for a protest march by women's groups on Thursday that had police on tenterhooks. Another round of protests could precipitate a fresh confrontation with the government.

Massive protests over Delhi gang rape, PM meets Shinde

NEW DELHI: Police fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge and use of water cannons on Saturday to disperse thousands of people who had gathered at Raisina Hill close to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest against the gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in a bus six days ago.

But the government said it was already acting on the protesters' demands and appealed for calm.

Some of the protesters, who were injured in the police action, were taken to a hospital.

Police first used water cannons to disperse the crowd but as the protesters did not budge, they used teargas shells and wielded sticks.

Policemen were seen chasing people, many of them students. Some protesters resorted to stone-pelting too.

As the people reassembled, police again used water cannons to disperse them.

Apart from Raisina Hill, protesters had converged at India Gate too.

Minister of state for home RPN Singh said police had been asked to exercise maximum restraint and the government was acting on people's demands.

The minister told a news channel that police could not allow people to break barricades and enter government buildings.

Calling for calm, he said there was no police action at places where protesters were peaceful.

Some people, he said, were trying to make it an unruly mob.

"I'm not justifying use of teargas," RPN Singh said but added that there were attempts to break barricades in the sensitive area close to the President's house and other key government offices.

"Government is hearing them (the protesters) loud and clear," he said.

Police would seek maximum punishment for the guilty in the gang rape case and strict steps were being taken to ensure safety of women, he added.

Police have arrested all the six accused in the case.

The rape victim is currently battling for her life in a hospital here.

RPN Singh said the government was willing to talk to the people but the protest should be orderly.

But the protesters, which included school students, lambasted police action and said they would stay put.

"We were protesting in a peaceful manner. They started beating us. Is this democracy? We are just demanding a strong law," Ritika, a college student, said.

"We are not afraid of police action. We'll come here daily till we get justice," said Ruchi, another student.

"Why teargas shells; why lathicharge; why water cannons? We are students, not terrorists. Why so much police here; why don't they stand on the road to stop crime?" she added.

Protestors were carrying posters and banners.

"My tight top, high heels are not an invitation," read one poster.

Another read: "Law of zero tolerance for rapists."

The protesters started arriving at India Gate since early morning and were joined by former army chief Gen VK Singh.

They then began marching towards the high-security Rashtrapati Bhavan on Raisina Hill but were stopped by security personnel, who had put up barricades.

Outrage has been swelling across the country after the woman was tortured and subjected to brutal gang rape in a moving private bus on December 16 in Delhi while she and a male friend were going home after watching a film.

PM MEETS HOME MINISTER

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday directed home minister Sushilkumar Shinde to ensure sense of security in Delhi and see that incidents like last Sunday's gang rape do not recur.

The directive came when Shinde called Singh to brief him on the situation in the aftermath of the gang-rape incident, sources said.

Shinde told the Prime Minister that he was personally monitoring the situation.

Sources said the Prime Minister told Shinde that he should ensure a sense of security in the capital, whose law and order is the direct responsibility of the home minister.

Singh asked Shinde to take all measures to see that there is no recurrence of the incidents like the recent gang rape of 23-year-old girl who was also brutally assaulted by the six accused.
